Inspired by a recent show on the-loft.tv about organic beer, I thought it would be useful to share some information about another overlooked hemp product- beer.

While the website mentioned in the video has a comprehensive comparison of several beers- right down to alcohol percentage and their impressions of the taste- that we think is worth checking out, none of the beers are hemp-based.

Some purists argue that the traditional recipes for beer have been tried and true for centuries, so they aren’t in need of any updating. Others say that making beer from more novel ingredients like hemp can only make a good thing even better. Here are three hemp-based beers that I’ll be checking out soon before I side with beer purists or beer progressives. I’ll be reporting on these brands, and any others I might come across, as soon as they’re sampled.

Cool Beer’s Millienium Buzz. (Looks like your average “hockey beer”, so I’ll try it but won’t expect anything special.)

Hemp Nigata beer- profiled on Beer Advocate,

Dieu du Ciel’s Fumisterie Hemp Beer.

¿C’est What?’s Hemp Ale almost made the list because it’s brewed by a small Canadian craft brewer, but was vetoed by its Toronto-area-only availability. Another beer geography is keeping me from trying is Adnam’s. Not quite hemp beer (at all), but I think it’s still worth a mention

If anyone has tried these brands, or has any suggestions for me to try, I’ll be checking the forum for your comments.

Hemp oil is easier to stumble upon than crude oil, so it seems to make sense that it would be a viable alternative. However the article was left unanswered. Does anyone know if hemp really is an alternative to the petrolium-based oils we currently are stuck on?

The hemp industry had a resurgence in the mid 90’s and hasn’t made it fully into the mainstream yet. Most mainstream sources that offer solutions to climate change and the depletion of petroleum resources look elsewhere than hemp.

However, since 1994, Stemergy (www.stemergy.com) has used technology to find ways to use hemp fibers instead of petroleum based fibers in a range of applications. “We are in a new environmental and economic paradigm and renewable materials will continue to replace non-renewable resources in wide ranging applications.” stated company President Geofrey Kime, P.Eng.

Stemology could be one of the Canadian companies that takes advantage of hemp’s many benefits for economic and environmental gain.
